GENERAL SUMMARY

The Associate Clinical Director of Pediatric Anesthesia shall be a pediatric anesthesiologist with broad experience in the management of operating rooms and clinical scheduling. The Associate Clinical Director serves in a dual role as a clinician and administrator for the anesthesiology department under the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia. In this role, they are responsible in assisting in the day to day management of the staff schedule as well as managing the OR schedule. This may involve daily review of the schedule, establishing standards for dynamic scheduling and movement of cases on the day of surgery, and reallocation of personnel as needed. This individual may also act as the arbiter of conflicts and review of processes to maximize efficiency.

In collaboration with the area-specific management teams, the Associate Clinical Director of Pediatric Anesthesia is responsible and accountable for the integration and coordination of the function of all pediatric anesthesiology personnel (anesthesiologists, CRNAs, anesthesiology residents, fellows and medical students). Through the chiefs and directors of the respective services, is responsible for assuring the appropriate behavior and professionalism of all personnel while in the perioperative arena. The Clinical Director will collaborate with the Pediatric Chief and area-specific management to ensure the development and monitoring of a cost effective operating and capital budget. The Associate Clinical Director is expected to assist the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia in these roles and assume these roles in his/her absence.

The Associate Clinical Director should aid in developing policies and procedures with area-specific management for the effective and efficient performance of these Anesthesiology services including finance/budgeting, scheduling, equipment, supplies and physical environment. The Associate Director seeks to further the patient care, research and teaching missions of the institution, and is eligible for a Harvard Medical School appointment. He/she is a key executive in procedure area matters in the affiliation of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ANESTHESIA SERVICE:

1. Assigns, in conjunction with clinical director, all anesthesia staff, residents, CRNAs, and anesthesia support/technical staff to the procedure areas on a daily basis. Collaborates to structure the daily staff schedule to best accommodate the workload of all OR and OOR locations in the hospital that need scheduled, routine, or back-up anesthesia care. Works with clinical director to maintain adequate staffing levels for the service workload by advance planning and interaction with the Vice Chairman and Chairman. Would work independently in these roles in the absence of the Clinical Director

2. Works with medical director of the OR to determine efficient use of supplies; determines change in medical products and devices to best serve our patient population and staff needs.

3. Works with medical director of the OR to oversee and maintain the standards established and training requirements based on departmental and JCAHO guidelines.

4. Assists Clinical Director in assigning vacation, nonclinical days and other scheduling forecasting as necessary to maintain adequate staffing at all times.

SURGICAL AND MEDICAL SERVICES:

1. Acts as delegate for the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia when needed for physician interface between surgical, medical and anesthesia services. In collaboration with area-specific management, facilitates and balances anesthesia and nursing services to accommodate need. Meets regularly with the medical director of the operating room in order to coordinate clinical care efficiently.

2. In conjunction with the Clinical Director of the operating rooms, works with area management, nursing managers and admitting schedulers, is responsible for the short-term as well as long-term assignment of anesthesia-serviced block time. Monitors the utilization of the OR and invasive procedure areas by services; develops and implements policies to ensure that utilization is maximized in the OR and invasive procedure areas use and assignments can be revised in a timely fashion if surgeons and interventionalists are away or if volume declines.

3. Collaborates in the development of peri-procedural and procedural standards, and enforces these standards.

4. Provides physician interface between nursing, surgical, medical and anesthesia services.

- BE/BC Anesthesiology or equivalent - Meet all criteria for credentialing at the MEE - ACLS certification - MA Medical License - MA and Federal DEA license - Integrity, honesty and strong work ethic.

-The Associate Director must be a board-certified anesthesiologist with first-hand experience and intimate knowledge of the operating room setting within a large academic medical center. He/she must have a strong commitment to outstanding patient service and to the delivery of high quality medical care.

-Prior administrative and management experience is helpful but not required

-The Associate Director must have strong organization, personnel management, and analytic skills, and the ability to make timely and effective decisions and to adjudicate conflicts. He/she must have the self-confidence and the force of personality to exert the authority vested in the position.
