Overview

Department 440: Payload Launch Control Systems Engineering group supporting SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA and COLUMBIA programs. Department is responsible for Systems, Hardware, and Test. Department works closely with Software Engineering Department 454.

Applicant is applying to Department 440 Systems Engineering team supporting special project submarine programs. The systems engineering team is responsible for the development and maintenance of unique one-of-a-kind submarines. System engineers may be called upon to perform many diverse tasks during the project life cycle. Products include:

    Customer facing presentations
  • Requirements specification development
  • Designing of systems to include Cable Assembly Drawings
    • Connector selection
    • Junction box selection
    • Development to Mil-specs
    • Understanding of cross discipline products such as system's mechanical function
  • Interface development of physical connections and data
  • Task leadership and management
  • Schedule and budgeting development and execution
  • Risk development and management
  • Review of other discipline's products
  • Trade study and white paper research and authoring
  • Control system algorithm development
  • Concept of operation development
  • Model Based System Engineering
  • Validation and Verification of Requirements
  • Government Furnished Equipment interfacing and integration

Systems engineers typically do not perform detailed hardware or software design, but may occasionally assess detailed designs. The position requires the engineer to interface with NAVSEA, Naval Shipyards, Government vendors, sub-contractors and other EB departments and stakeholders as necessary. Travel may be required within the continental United States at an infrequent level. Applicant will report to the Groton/New London, CT facilities. Work from home on a part time basis is available based on department needs.

Applicant will be a part of a team executing the System's engineering V-model approach utilizing Agile, Waterfall, or a hybrid of both Agile and Waterfall approaches for product development and management. Applicant should have an understanding of what systems engineering entails.

The systems engineering team is responsible for the development and maintenance of requirements, integration of subsystems, validation testing, and fleet support of contractor furnished and government furnished handling systems, vehicle systems, and electronic systems.

Engineers will perform system engineering efforts from initial system design and development through hardware/software integration, component qualification, testing, platform support, delivery and post-delivery support to include analysis and resolution of fleet identified problems, assessment of obsolescence issues and identification of components for technical refresh.

The position requires the engineer perform technology investigations, trade-studies, identify/resolve program risks, identify opportunities for cost reduction and validate methods to ensure producible end products.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree or higher in an engineering or related discipline
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation communication skills
  • Experience working successfully both in a team environment and independently
  • Strong interpersonal skills speaking to all levels of understanding
  • Demonstrated effective engineering project management including management of budget, resources and schedule
  • Current DOD Secret security clearance or ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
  • Internal candidates must be from organizations outside of Operations (Gildart/Gabriel).

Preferred:

  • BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Systems Engineering
  • 3+ years of related experience
  • Experience in submarine electronics system development, integration, installation and test
  • Experience in network and clustered computing design
  • Understanding of design, build, sustain process, EVMS and design tools and processes is desirable
  • Experience with Siemens NX, IBM Rational DOORS, IBM Rational Rhapsody, MBSE tools, and Microsoft Office tools including Project
