The Optical Shop Coordinator position is key to maintaining ongoing operations for the outpatient MEHC Optical Shop. This is a unique role and stands alone as the manager of the optical shop for the selling of self-pay eyewear as well as Mass Health billable eyewear. MEHC Optometry Clinic also fills eye wear orders from other clinics that do not dispense Mass Health products. This is a wonderful opportunity for a motivated individual to learn to manage an optical shop for patients of all ages.

The Optical Shop Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Interpreting and filling optical prescriptions written by providers working in the department.
  • Managing eyewear and contact lens order cycle placing order, receiving product, dispensing product, while accurately maintaining status of every order.
  • Giving advice to patients on spectacle lens types, frames, and styling.
  • Managing MassHealth glasses orders, requesting providers to do prior authorization requests when necessary, and overseeing verification of finished orders.
  • Supervising front desk staff in advising patients on eyewear pricing, completing paperwork as needed, and overseeing customer care in the dispensary.
  • Performing eligibility and registration duties in the absence of front desk staff.
  • Taking frame and facial measurements to ensure correct fit and positioning, consulting with optometrists when necessary.
  • Performing minor frame repairs for eyeglasses and ordering replacements when needed.
  • Selecting and maintaining inventory, selling, and ordering a range of optical products including accessories.
  • Verifying lenses on delivery to ensure that they meet the required specifications.
  • Maintaining and arranging shop displays.

Schedule: 40 hours weekly, entirely onsite (Some evening hours required)

To qualify, you must have:

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Bilingual- Spanish desired
  • One year of optical experience required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.
  • Communication skills in order to effectively deal with patients, administrative staff, and families/young patients.
  • Keen organizational skills appropriate to operating a business within the department and balancing assigned tasks while completing responsibilities in the normal course of a clinical optometric setting.
  • Computer and research skills for tasks of word processing and data coordination.
  • Attention to detail, technical expertise, good customer service skills
