GENERAL OVERVIEW

An auxiliary person who has the necessary role of augmenting the care given by others to the patients in the (OR, PACU). Major functions include, but are not limited to: patient transport, cleaning and stocking of area, performs POCT for Glucose. Works under the direction of the nursing and administrative personnel in assigned work areas and is ultimately responsible to the supervisor of ORA's.

GUEST RELATIONS

1. Promotes a philosophy of patient/family focused care through cordial greeting and interactions with patient, families and hospital personnel.
2. Provides hospital/unit orientation information for guest, patients and families.
3. Demonstrates an awareness of hospital systems and procedures, location of all departments, treatment areas and other patient services. Refers patients, families and others to appropriate resources.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Transport patient to and from the area:

  • properly identifies patients
  • is aware of special procedures
  • is aware of special precautions in transferring patients in isolation.

2. Assists in the transfer of patients to and from stretchers and beds:

  • Ensures safety and support measures in patient transfer, i.e., bedrails raised, patient covered with blanket and warm.
  • Cleans stretchers between patient transfers.

3. Knows special procedures application regarding specialized equipment and instrumentation.

4. Cleans rooms between procedures with speed and effectiveness.

  • Anticipates procedure completion in advance and has supplies ready for immediate cleaning.
  • Has knowledge of special cleaning procedures for certain situations, i.e., MRSA, Jakob-Creutzfeldt.

5. General housekeeping duties throughout the area, i.e.:

  • fills solutions in warmers and sink dispensers
  • empty trash and linen hampers
  • restocks blankets, gowns and brushes in containers
  • mop floors when required. (Mops and buckets should be prepared at all times)
  • keeps all areas cleaned and free of trash and debris

6. Able to relieve in all areas of the Department. Knows procedures specific to each area, i.e., Day Surgery and PACU.

7. Measuring POCT Glucose

  • Acquires skills of POCT for Glucose and demonstrates proficiency.
  • Maintains annual certification and competencies in Health stream.
  • Responds to page to come to an OR to measure POCT Glucose.
  • Interacts with anesthesia provider: make contact upon entering the room.
  • Choose appropriate testing site, communicate with anesthesia provider as necessary.
  • Perform test without harm to self, others, the ongoing procedure (respect sterility)
  • Communicate results of test.
  • Provide order forms when insulin drips are used.
  • Discuss follow up with anesthesia provider
  • Maintain follow up list for all ongoing cases
  • Manage acquired data
  • Upload to medical record platform
  • Maintenance of Glucometers

ADDITIONAL O.R. DUTIES

1. Helps to hold limbs and position patients as requested. May Prep Cardiac Patients

2. Performs all messenger/escort activities for the area, i.e., blood pick ups, laboratory deliveries.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in a busy area with a high stress atmosphere.
  • Works in an area with some physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors and high noise level.
  • Work requires potential exposure to cuts on hands and fingers from needles and blades.
  • Work is underground with no windows or exposure to light.
  • Works in a patient care environment where there is some exposure to communicable disease, and in some areas sealed sources of radiation and radioisotopes.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Must be able to read, write and understand English for purpose of communication and carrying out assignments.

Experience: Prior hospital experience preferred but not required.

Other: Personal attributes such as team spirit, dependability, initiative and ability to accept direction are necessary.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Work requires 2-4 weeks orientation to routine duties and specific duties of varied areas.
  • Must be aware of safety standards and hazards in room.
  • Must have knowledge of special procedures in caring for patients on isolation.
  • Must be aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting of heavy objects.
  • Must posses interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with other health care members
  • Work requires intense physical effort, walking long distances, lifting heavy supplies, pushing carts and beds, lifting patients.
  • Must constantly be alert and attentive to progress of O.R. schedule to meet tight deadlines of following cases.
